The Satin Price: Finding Resilience Through Ballet

Ever since Denise was a kid, she has been captivated by ballet dancers on TV. Exquisite grace as their lithe silhouettes danced across the floors, spines straight and tilted with natural pride, their movements reminiscent of the undulations of the flowing water. Like most ballerinas, what she truly dreamed of was having her “own pair of pointe shoes”.

Denise’s devotion for the things she is most passionate about started from the moment she rose from her toes with fluidity and dexterity, proving that years of hard work have finally paid off. After six years of practicing the basics and the fundamentals, getting her first pair of en pointe shoes was a major milestone of her journey. Satin shoes doused in delicacy symbolized a major rite of passage, dedication, and the culmination of years of hard training in classical ballet.

But Denise’s journey was not without her challenges:

“But I quickly learned that pointe shoes are not just beautiful, but also the definition of pain. Blisters and bruises followed every practice. Yet that pain taught me something invaluable: to achieve your goals, you must endure the pain in the process. After countless lessons of pushing through the discomfort, I was finally able to perform my first solo en pointe. To this day, I still remember standing alone in the wings, heart pounding, stage lights blindingly bright. When the music began, I stepped out and rose onto my toes, and for those few minutes, I became the dancer I had always dreamed of being.”

Exploring and working for her passion for ballet has taught Denise invaluable virtues of discipline, resilience, and perseverance. Ribbon-tied and satin-encased blocks of canvas and glue are perhaps the perfect encapsulation of mastery and determination: surrender to discomfort is necessary to reap the rewards of one’s labour. Pain and blisters and pressure become proof of progress, the price of pursuit for success and recognition.

Technology has become a complex language left for us to decode, forged from the rapid evolution of human civilization. Developing fluency in this new tongue is essential for future generations to navigate a world dominated by change. But as we immerse ourselves in algorithms and interfaces dominating, it is imperative that we retain the foundational skills of communication, critical thinking, and structured thought more than ever. And that is precisely what propelled me to join Inkoders, to empower future generations by building digital literacy. Joining Inkoders as the Director of Curriculum Affairs allows me to fuse my passion for language with technological advancement. I am an avid debater and speaker in public policy and international relations, as well as a tutor for the minds of tomorrow. I have always found the beauty in how words can be yielded as weapons of logic, how words can be painted for vivid emotions, and how words can bridge the gap between different minds. Regardless of how efficient any software can be, the core purpose of technology has always been rooted in helping humanity advance. Knowing we cannot be dependent on these tools is to not only honor generations of the written word, but to foster our independence, cognitive ability, and self-sufficiency.
