From Bookshelf Renovation to Recycled Computers: Volunteering at Crossroads Foundation HK

Crossroads Foundation Hong Kong acts as the bridge between those in need and those who can help, delivering aid locally and globally in countries including South Africa, Ukraine, Moldova and Malawi. Through today’s volunteering, we supported resource provision for those in need, helping process, package and distribute items ranging from books for schools to computers for underprivileged youths. By working hands-on, we directly supported foundational and technological literacy through ensuring that resources reach those who need them most. We worked in 3 core areas of Crossroads Foundation’s operations:

HONG KONG DISTRIBUTION

We experienced the heart of Crossroads Foundation’s mission — turning donated items into direct support for our community. Beyond collecting and transporting different items such as beds, sofas and chairs through the warehouse, we had the privilege of seeing families choose the exact furniture and supplies they wanted for their homes. Though exhausting, the job was immensely fulfilling and made our impact feel real, showing us that we were truly making a difference. It gave us a direct glimpse into how charitable foundations like Crossroads provide choice, empowering everyone globally to receive home supplies, technological and literary resources, regardless of their circumstances. This allows them to directly bridge the global resource divide whilst fostering a stronger and more compassionate global community.

COMPUTERS

The session focused on disassembling unrepairable desktop computers going to be recycled, so we could retrieve and save any functioning hardware, including SSDs, RAM and slot covers, ensuring every donated good and available resource is fully utilized. By repurposing these components to repair other computers, the foundation extends the lifecycle of electronics for impoverished communities worldwide. For instance, some refurbished computers donated to students in Malawi and Moldova allowed them to access essential digital tools, supporting their technological literacy from middle school all the way through graduation, bridging the digital divide and offering them life changing educational opportunities.

SMALL GOODS

Our session focused on wrapping items such as mattresses and bed frames in stretch film – preventing dust and damage, which will be directly shipped to support refugees who are lacking resources in foreign shelters across Ukraine, Palestine, and more. We also taped barcoded labels to various goods, ensuring that multi-part items were shipped in complete sets without missing components. Collaborating alongside passionate volunteers, we felt the warmth that drives our shared mission to offer help to those in need, leaving us with a strong sense of connection to the larger, global community that bonds us together as we navigate the future era.
